Common mistakes and refusal reasons
1. Insurance not meeting the minimum
40,000 THB outpatient and 400,000 THB inpatient are floors, not targets. Policies below these are rejected.
2. Police clearance older than 3 months
Must be issued within 3 months of submission. Old clearances are rejected.
3. Funds not in a Thai bank for the deposit route
O-A from abroad can use a foreign bank statement, but the extension inside Thailand requires a Thai bank account.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between O-A and Non-O retirement?
O-A is filed from abroad, gives a year on entry, and requires insurance, police clearance and a medical certificate. Non-O gives 90 days first and is extended to a year inside Thailand without the insurance requirement.
Do I need health insurance?
Yes, for O-A. Minimum 40,000 THB outpatient and 400,000 THB inpatient. This is mandatory and applications without it are not accepted.
Can I renew O-A inside Thailand?
Yes. The annual extension is done at immigration inside Thailand. You do not need to fly out.
Can I work on a retirement visa?
No. Employment, freelancing and running a business are all prohibited. If you need to earn, look at DTV for foreign-source remote income or Non-B for Thai employment.
