How to apply
Route 1 — inside Thailand
You are already in the country legally and move onto a student basis. The practical minimum for the whole process is 25 days.
- 01Check your current stamp and expiryIf fewer than 25 days remain, this route is risky or simply unavailable.
- 02Choose the school and the programmeThe school has to be able to issue the paperwork, and the programme has to be real.
- 03The school prepares the documentsAcceptance letter, registration papers, syllabus, payment confirmation.
- 04The permission letter is obtainedThrough the school, from the Ministry of Education.
- 05File on the ED basisAddress in Thailand and TM30 registration are checked at this point.
Route 2 — at a mission abroad
Looks faster: about ten days of review. The preparation, however, starts in Thailand.
- 01Choose the school and enrolThe school collects your documents while you are still in Thailand.
- 02Obtain the Ministry of Education permission letterThis is the step people skip. Without it, filing abroad may be impossible.
- 03Leave Thailand, or be abroad alreadyCheck that the mission accepts applicants in your situation.
- 04File at the mission or through e-VisaReview takes roughly ten days — an average, not a promise.

Where the study happens
The kind of institution changes what gets checked hardest.
Usually straightforward
- University — bachelor, master or exchange, with an admission letter
- International school, for a child, with the parents’ documents
Checked harder
- Language school — licence, letter, syllabus and hours all verified
- Specialised courses — whether the mission accepts the basis at all
For a language school, the licence and the permission letter matter more than anything else in the file.
How to apply: inside Thailand or from abroad
Filing from outside Thailand looks faster on paper, but the MOE letter still has to be obtained inside Thailand first. Read this before comparing the two review times below.
Common mistakes and refusal reasons
1. Leaving Thailand without the MOE letter
The most expensive mistake on this visa. The letter is prepared inside Thailand, through the school, before you go.
2. Starting inside Thailand too late
The practical minimum is 25 days. Fewer days than that and the route closes.
3. A school that cannot evidence the programme
An acceptance letter without dates, syllabus or contacts invites a follow-up request or a refusal.
4. Treating study as a formality
If the aim is only the visa, expect questions about attendance, payment and the programme itself.
5. Repeated ED cycles without real study
A visa history that reads as misuse is assessed as misuse.
6. Not checking the country you file from
Not every mission accepts non-residents.
Frequently asked questions
Which is faster — inside Thailand or abroad?
Abroad looks faster: about ten days of review against a 25-day minimum inside Thailand. But the Ministry of Education permission letter has to be obtained in Thailand first, so the real timeline is rarely shorter.
Can I work on an ED visa?
No. An education visa carries no work right. Employment in Thailand needs a Non-B visa and a separate work permit.
What if I have not chosen a school yet?
Then the file cannot start. The school is what produces the acceptance letter, the syllabus and the permission letter — everything else follows from it.
Do I have to actually attend?
Yes. Attendance, payment and the programme can all be checked, and a file that reads as visa-only is a weak file.
Can a parent pay for the course?
Yes. A sponsored application needs the sponsor’s statement, a sponsorship letter, their passport and proof of relationship where the sponsor is a parent.
